In the past there were not so many restrictions regarding the luggage we carried on a flight. Today the issue has become quite complicated since each airline has its own rules.

Air ticket rates have become complex because they have included many variables and the final price depends on these variables. Most airlines already charge a “plus” if you want to take, in addition to hand luggage , one or more checked baggage.

Knowing in advance the size and weight requirements of hand luggage is essential to avoid being charged a “Plus” when you arrive at the airport.

Note: A hand luggage is a small bag or suitcase which you could take with you in the cabin. The airlines can call it in different ways: hand luggage, cabin luggage or carry on. Most airlines also allow you to carry a person item such as a laptop or a camera with your carry-on luggage.

Other things to keep in mind about hand luggage

  1. The maximum measurements allowed in hand luggage must include wheels, pockets and handles. Find out more in the post: What to take in your carry-on luggage when traveling by plane?
  2. If you are going to take more than one flight to reach your destination (connections, stopovers, etc.) it is important that you check the regulations of all the airlines in advance.
  3. If you already know you are going to be oversized or overweight, you should pay for the “extra baggage or weight” beforehand because doing it at the airport is usually much more expensive.
  4. Keep in mind the current restrictions and airport security regulations for your hand luggage.

Hand luggage must pass through a security scanner and prohibited items are not allowed (objects such as firearms, sharp objects, flammable substances and liquids of more than 100ml, among others).
