Packing your carry-on bag, especially these days with airline requirements and restrictions requires some skills to avoid extra charges at the gate. After more than 20 years of travel experience, I have compiled in this article my best tips so that packing your carry-on bag for your next trip is child’s play!

Hand suitcase: keys to preparing your luggage

The idea of this article is to review all the important aspects when packing a carry-on bag. I will explain from the choice of suitcase or backpack, what to take and how to put it, airport restrictions, etc. Do not go traveling without reviewing these tips that will come in handy!

Suitcase or backpack?

The first thing you have to decide is whether you are going to carry your hand luggage in a backpack or in a suitcase. Which is better? Both options have pros and cons and I think the answer is very personal and will depend on your needs. I always prefer to carry a backpack because I find it very easy to transport.

On the other hand, there are also many people who prefer a suitcase with wheels to avoid having to carry all the weight on their backs. Like I said, each option has its pros and cons and the choice is very personal. The key is that you choose the one that best suits your way of traveling.

Whether you choose a backpack or a suitcase, my advice is to make it very light, compact and, above all, within the maximum measurements allowed by the airline.

Before packing, check the weather at your destination

Knowing the weather is essential to know what type of clothing to wear since it is not the same to travel in winter as in summer or just arrive a few days of torrential rain. There are many web pages that provide you with weather forecasts and, although many times they are not 100% accurate, they will give you an approximate idea.

Of course, even if you travel in winter, check if your hotel has an indoor pool to add a swimsuit to your luggage. On the other hand, if you are going to travel through an area with large differences in altitude, keep in mind that it is usually quite cool at high altitude, even in the height of summer.

Cultural aspects of your destination

Before choosing the clothes that you are going to take on your trip, it is important to learn about the dress codes of your destination and take in your luggage the clothes that best suit the country you are traveling to, thus respecting the local culture.

In Iran, for example, it is mandatory by law for women to cover their heads. Another example is Morocco, a country where almost 99% profess Islam and where women tend to dress modestly, covering their entire bodies.

What to take in your carry-on bag?

Once you have chosen the suitcase or backpack according to your preferences, you should take into account the restrictions of the airline. A good way to not forget anything is to make a list of all the items that you want to put in your hand luggage.

Remember to bring underwear and an extra T-shirt. It does not bulk anything, and you will appreciate it. And always, always, it is good to bring a jacket or sweater and/or a pashmina or scarf, because it can be very cold on the plane.

If you wonder, can I bring shoes in my hand luggage? Don’t worry, you can take shoes in your hand luggage without any problem.

And it is very important that you also put the chargers for all your electronic devices in your hand luggage. And adapters, in case you travel to a country with different plugs.
